Five ESSENTIAL cosmetics for Outdoor Girls

So I consider myself to be an "outdoor girl". I suppose one would define an outdoor girl as a girl that likes to spend time outdoors. Quite simple. I definitely fall into that category. I spend all day outdoors in the job that I do (I am the Warden of the world's only herd of Wild Cattle. See here), many of my hobbies involve being outdoors such as running, hiking, gardening, shooting, camping, dog walking etc and I generally just prefer being outside to inside.

One of the main reasons being that it is usually warmer outside, due to us living in an 18th Century stone cottage. But being an outdoor girl doesn't mean turning into a caveman (woman). In fact I'd argue that we need to take more care of ourselves as we are putting our bodies through a lot more than  women that aren't so outdoorsie. Here is a list of the top five things that I use on a daily basis to keep myself looking (and feeling!) fresh as a daisy.

  1. Moisturiser: I get through a hell of a lot of moisturiser! In the winter, my face is constantly being battered by the wind and rain so dries out really quickly. In the summer, my face is obviously exposed to dry heat so I do end up with dry skin all year round. Fun times. At the moment I am using Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light moisturiser. I am a big fan of Simple's products because they use the minimum of ingredients and seem to work really well on my skin.
  2. Lip Balm: Again this is something I use all year round because my face does take a battering from the English weather. A lot of people only use lip balm when their lips are already dry, but I am a big believer in prevention is better than cure so I use a bit of lip balm on a daily basis just to stop my lips from drying out. My favourite lip balm is Nivea Lip Care Essential Original.
  3. Body Lotion: Particularly in the summer as I do often have bare arms and legs (I know, gasp!) I slap on a whole load of body lotion after I get out of the bath in the evening, which just stops my skin turning to leather. My favourite at the moment is Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion. It's a bog standard moisturising lotion for all skin types.
  4. Sun Cream: All the time, even when there's cloud cover. This is so important if you spend a lot of time outside. I know it can be a pain sometimes to stop and put on a load of sun cream. But do you know what's even more of a pain? Skin cancer! If it's preventable, do it! I really like Nivea Sun Protect and Moisture (because it acts as a moisturiser too!). I always use factor 30 or above because I am quite pale skinned naturally.
  5. Waterproof Mascara: This is really the only cosmetic that I wear on a daily basis purely for looks rather than practicality (although it is practical too). I don't wear a lot of makeup, as in none apart from Mascara. It just gives your face a little bit of something interesting. And of course, working in the outdoors, it has to be waterproof. On days when I'm chainsawing I sweat a lot so it has to be able to with stand that. And of course there'll be rainy days too. So it has to be able to withstand that. At the moment I'm using Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara. It works for me and that's all that matters really.
So I hope you've all found this a little bit helpful. If you're off doing something outdoorsie next weekend, maybe you've spotted something here that you've forgotten to prepare. All of the products mentioned above are available on amazon, click on the pictures to follow the links.
